First Steps on the Path: Heal Yourself
On the journey to your authentic self the most important work you can undertake is self healing, especially healing the wounds to your self-esteem. Self healing is also the most important work you can do to heal the planet. The one area of the world that we all have control over is ourselves.
Some of you may already have started to travel down this path. Maybe you are already aware of issues in your life you need to address, such as being able to establish healthy boundaries or letting go of grudges.
Maybe you have a counselor or health practitioner that you visit on a regular basis. If this is true, then good for you. If this something you are not currently doing, then I encourage you to start. Don’t wait for a whack on the head by a cosmic 2×4, or as a popular bumper sticker proclaims ”another life experience” to occur to begin this important work.
Healing is what our lives are about. All of us carry wounds to our psyche. To quote the playwright Eugene O’Neill “Man is born broken. He lives by mending. The grace of God is glue.” There is no shame in being “broken.” This is part of being fully human.
All of us who inhabit this planet are on a continuous path of healing. Our task now is to take that next step forward on the journey, to seek the healing grace of the Divine Spirit. When we know our wounds and address them in a healthy manner then we are able to take a big step forward in connecting with our authentic self and with the Divine Force.
One way to create a bread crumb path to your inner psyche is to keep a personal journal. Keeping a journal allows you to have a private conversation with yourself. It can also help you to see patterns you engage in. Don’t show your journal to anyone. This information is just for you.
Your journal is a safe place that you can go and say anything without being judged. Writing in your journal is a good way to let off steam and keep balance in your life. It is much more productive to address something like anger in your journal first. By looking at feelings like anger on paper you can observe them to see if your anger is justified or if you are overreacting to an emotional trigger.
When writing in your journal, keywords to look for in your entries are: Always and Never. (For example: Blank is ALWAYS picking on me. Or Blank NEVER listens to me.) When we use absolute words like Always and Never, they indicate that something deeper is usually lurking beneath the surface. The words, Always and Never, can point to inner wounds or shadow issues that need to be addressed. With these sign posts uncovered you can begin to journey farther down the healing path to your authentic self.
Journaling is just one way to work on personal healing. Later I will discuss other techniques to help you uncover your authentic self.
Blessings,
Swan
